    06 Dec 2018

    New York (United Nations) -

Minister of Economy and Finance, Mohamed Benchaaboun, took part on Tuesday at the United Nations headquarters in New York in the High Level Meeting on Middle Income Countries (MICs), organized by the UN General Assembly, which discussed the gaps and challenges of middle income countries in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

At this meeting, chaired by President of the UN General Assembly, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, Benchaaboun participated in an interactive panel on the successes and challenges of the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Middle Income Countries.

In this regard, he recalled the many challenges facing the 109 middle income countries, which account for nearly 70% of the world's population, highlighting in particular the persistence of poverty and socio-economic inequalities, despite the commendable advances in terms of growth.

In this regard, the minister shed the light on the Moroccan experience regarding the implementation of the SDGs in the framework of transversal public policies, such as the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH) and the various sectoral strategies, including Morocco’s Green Plan, the Industrial Acceleration Plan and the Energy Strategy.

Benchaaboun also highlighted Morocco's adoption in 2017 of the National Sustainable Development Strategy, which aims to better integrate the SDGs into sectoral strategies.

In addition, the minister delivered a statement on behalf of the Kingdom of Morocco at the plenary session of this high-level meeting, in which he called for strengthening international cooperation for development as well as global partnership frameworks to increase support to MICs.

On this occasion, Benchaaaboun reiterated the Kingdom's willingness to work for the promotion of effective cooperation, within the framework of a strengthened global partnership, based on co-responsibility, equity and solidarity.
