Thousands of Morocco teachers protest temporary employment

14 Mar 2019

Thousands of Moroccan teachers demonstrated yesterday for the second week demanding the government employ them as permanent staff.

Three years ago, the government launched the public sector contractual employment programme which began in the education sector. Unlike regular teachers who are hired and paid by the government, contractual teachers are hired by their academies. Though both have the same salaries, contractual teachers do not have medical insurance or access to pensions.

Protests were organised in the cities of Tetouan, Oujda and Meknes, as well as the capital, Rabat.

Meanwhile, five educations unions called for a general strike in the next two days.
