28 Aug 2019

Amman, Aug. 27 (Petra) -- The 6th International Renewable Energy Forum and the 5th Arab Renewable Energy Forum kicked off on Tuesday to discuss developments in the sector, which is expected to garner investments at $500 billion by 2040.

'Since 2014, Jordan has developed a legislative environment in areas of renewable energy projects (solar and wind) to add clean power to the electricity grid with a total capacity of 1200 megawatts, and contribute to generating about 12 percent of the electricity in the Kingdom in 2018,' said Energy Minister Hala Zawati, who attended the forums on behalf of Prime Minister Omar Razzaz.

Zawati said this percentage is expected to rise to about 20 percent in 2022. 'One fifth of our electricity needs will come from renewable energy, while the contribution of renewable energy didn't exceed 1 percent in 2014,' she added.

She explained that the volume of investment in renewable energy exceeded $4 billion.

She noted that the ministry is preparing a long-term strategy for the energy sector that will run until 2030 and a future vision until 2050 in partnership with relevant stakeholders from public and private sectors.

In 2018, Jordan ranked first among countries in the Middle East and North Africa, and third in the world behind Chile and India among 103 countries from around the world in terms of growth in the clean and renewable energy market.

Participants in the forum, organized by the Arab Renewable Energy Commission (AREC), will discuss developments in the renewable energy sector, prospects for its development and challenges facing it.

According to organizers, the forum will announce new jobs in energy management in Arab government and private institutions.

On the sidelines of the events, Zawati held a meeting with the Morocco's Minister of Energy and Minerals, on cooperation in fields of energy and ways to promote them.
