Morocco's Abdellatif Jouahri among World's Top Ten Central Bank Governors

    14 Oct 2020

Casablanca - Abdellatif Jouahri, the governor of Bank al-Maghrib, appears, for the fourth time in a row, among the world's top 10 Central Bank governors, according to the latest ranking issued by US magazine Global Finance.

Jouahri earned an 'A grade,' which is the highest distinction awarded by 'Central Banker Report Cards,' an annual assessment of Central Bank governors by Global Finance, according to a Bank al-Maghrib (BAM-central bank) press release.

The Central Banker Report Cards, published annually by Global Finance since 1994, grade the central bank governors of more than 90 key countries as well as the European Union, the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, the Bank of Central African States and the Central Bank of West African States.

'Even in good times, central bankers face an array of challenges. Today, with a global health crisis sweeping the world, they are squeezed between political and practical realities like they never have before,' said Global Finance publisher and editorial director Joseph Giarraputo.

'Our annual Central Banker Report Cards analyze which countries have sound leadership at the economic helm, showcasing policy stances that work,' he added.

Grades are based on an 'A' to 'F' scale for success in areas such as inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management. ('A' represents an excellent performance down through 'F' for outright failure.) Subjective criteria also apply.

The Central Bankers earning an 'A' grade in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Card include Philip Lowe (Australia), Roberto Campos Neto (Brazil), Dimitar Radev (Bulgaria), Mario Marcel Cullell (Chile), Mohammad Yousef Al-Hashel (Kuwait), Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus (Malaysia), Julio Velarde Flores (Peru), Lee Ju-yeol (South Korea) and Yang Chin-long (Taiwan).
