Rabat- The performance of Tanger Med has been excellent this year despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jeune Afrique reported on Tuesday.

'The Moroccan hub continues to trace its path in the Mediterranean Sea, where it has become the number 1 complex for containerized traffic,' wrot Jeune Afrique.

The Port of Tanger is a Moroccan port located on the strait of Gibraltar, serving as a gateway for shipment.

The Port was established in 2007. Since then, it has outperformed some ports in the so-called developed world, such as the Port of Felixton in the UK, as well as Seattle and Savannah in the US.

Tanger Med has become a global hub in terms of logistics. It is the largest Port on the Meditteranean coast by crate size, and has earned international recognition for its services and strategic location.

The Port recently recorded excellent results on its performance in the first quarter of 2021.

Despite the effects of a global pandemic, Tanger Med's turnover was MAD 739 million ($ 90 million), accounting for an increase of 18% compared to the same period in 2020.

In the first quarter of 2020, Tanger Med 1 and the passenger's port turnover increased by 3%, attaining MAD 500 million ($60 million) compared to a 488% increase in 2020.

For Tanger Med 2, the turnover attained MAD 239 million ($29 million) in the first quarter of 2021 compared to MAD 139 million ($17 million) registered at the end of March 2020, equivalent to a 72% increase.

Other indicators of portuary activity also show Tanger Med's performance is in continual improvement.

According to the port's latest financial statement, it registered an increase of 35% in containers and 5% in international road transport (TRI) trucks by March 2021.

In addition, the report noted an increase of MAD 387 million ($47 million) in investments related to infrastructure, roads, and other IT facilities.

Jeune Afrique noted that Tanger Med had gained six places in the ranking of major container ports.

The port currently occupies 45th place worldwide and 1st in Africa, according to the latest 'Wold Top containers ports' ranking

The magazine attributes the 'economic prowesses' of the Moroccan port to the inauguration of a TC3 container terminal in Tanger Med 2.

According to Jeune Afrique, this has resulted in a rise of more than 35% in container traffic compared to 2020.

With a record of 5,771,221 TEU containers processed in 2020, Tanger Med appears to be the best port in the Mediterranean sea, ahead of the Valencia Port in Spain which processed 5.42 million TEU in the same period.
