Rabat - Local security services in Morocco’s Laayoune have aborted three irregular migration attempts in the past three days, according to an official statement.

During the operations, security services intercepted 231 irregular migrants, all from sub-Saharan countries.

Local services started the first operations on Tuesday, intercepting two boats that included 97 would-be irregular migrants.

Units of the Moroccan Royal Navy also intercepted a pneumatic zodiac with 61 sub-Saharan migrants on board, north of the port of Laayoune.

The would-be migrants were planning to reach the Canary Islands. After intercepting their boats, Royal Navy services transferred the migrants safely to the port of Laayoune.

Coastal surveillance services intercepted 19 would-be migrants, including 13 women and one minor, as well as five men. Services also seized two zodiacs, two motogodilles, and 15 barrels of gasoline.

On Sunday last week, the Moroccan Royal Navy also intercepted 54 sub-Saharan migrants aboard an inflatable boat.

The operations are part of Morocco’s intensified efforts to combat human trafficking and irregular migration off its coasts.

Morocco has prevented more than 14,000 undocumented migration attempts in the past four years, according to government-compiled data.

Moroccan security services have also dismantled over 5,000 trafficking networks and rescued over 80,500 migrants at sea.
