Rabat - Xlinks, a UK-based renewable energy solutions company, has appointed Ian Davis, former Rolls-Royce chairman to its board of directors.

African Intelligence reported on January 3 that Davis officially joined the company's board of directors in December.

Xlinks is responsible for the mega project connecting Morocco and the UK with a 3,800-kilometer underwater electricity transmission cable.

In addition to his chairmanship at Rolls-Royce, Ian Davis has served in many prominent positions as a businessman.

According to the European Round Table for Industry, Davis is also a non-executive director at Johnson & Johnson and Majid Al Futtaim Holdings. He was also a partner at Mckinsey for 31 years.

Davis was Knighted in 2019 for his distinguished services in the UK business sector.

The businessman holds a master’s degree in Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Balliol College at Oxford University.

The UK-Morocco power project made international headlines in recent months. Xlinks wants the project to bring Morocco’s vast renewable energy opportunities to the British market.

Morocco is already well-known for its renewable energy assets. In November 2021, BBC described Morocco as “famous” for its investments in renewable energy.

The British broadcaster also described the North African country as having a “well deserved” reputation” as a “climate leader.”

In October 2021, the Moroccan government announced its commitment to raising to 80% its use of renewable energy by 2050.

In the document announcing the country’s energy strategy for 2050, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development said: “The rapid and continuous drop in the cost of renewable energies and storage validates the orientation taken by Morocco and authorizes the adoption of very ambitious decarbonization strategies focused on the production of green electricity and hydrogen.”
