Rabat - Former Moroccan Minister of Tourism Lahcen Haddad received on Monday an award for “the best achievement with a lifelong impact,” in recognition of his contribution to boosting Morocco’s tourism industry during his time as a minister.

Haddad received the prize on the sidelines of the 7th Mediterranean Tourism Forum, which took place from June 13-14 in Malta.

Maltese President George Vella handed the award to the former Moroccan minister.

Haddad, who currently serves as a member of the Moroccan House of Representatives and President of the Morocco-EU Joint Parliamentary Committee, said the award constitutes an acknowledgment of Morocco’s cultural diversity and values.

He further added that the prize is also a form of tribute to the efforts Morocco has made under the leadership of King Mohammed VI to boost leadership in the field of sustainable development, innovation, cultural creativity, and good practices in the tourism industry.

Morocco has positioned itself as a key, much-prized destination for tourists from across the world.

As well as being consistently ranked among the world's safest countries in recent years, Morocco has also been recognized over the years as one of the best tourist destinations in the world -- be it in terms of the world-class quality of hotels, the country’s rich historical and cultural appeal, and the affordability of vacation packages.

As it recovers from the COVID-induced economic crisis, the North African country aspires to revive its tourism industry by appealing to more “strategic markets” for tourists.

Over the past weeks, Morocco’s National Tourist Office (ONMT) has launched a number of initiatives, including the Light Tour, aimed at promoting Morocco as an ideal tourist destination.
