Rabat - A delegation from the US State Department participated yesterday in the launch of “Dakhla-Market,” an e-commerce platform that allows local artisans in the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region to showcase their products and services online.

The initiative is a part of the “Promoting Economic Opportunity in Dakhla and Laayoune” project which is funded by the US government through the Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).

According to the US Embassy in Morocco, the US officials met with beneficiaries of the MEPI’s economic development programs, including the DakhlaConnect, a digital platform launched in January 2021. It enables business owners in the region to connect with potential partners and investors from Morocco and abroad.

“We are excited to partner with the regional investment center and local officials in support of artisans and young entrepreneurs,” Said Ariel Vaagen, a Department of State official, adding that the new platform “will contribute to regional economic growth and create additional opportunities for the young people.”

Mounir Houari, director of the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab Regional Investment Center, described Dakhla-Market as “a great new asset” and “a great addition to the already tremendous success of the DakhlaConnect digital platform.”

The US delegation also attended a number of soft skills workshops, which are part of the “Skills for Success” program. The 220-hour program was implemented by US non-profit organization Amideast, under a $1.3 million (MAD 13 million) grant from MEPI.

Around 900 unemployed youth in the region, particularly women and disabled people, are expected to benefit from the program over the next three years. The “Skills for Success” program aims to equip the beneficiaries with tools and skills that would enable them to find job opportunities.

The program focuses on five key aspects of professional and personal development: English language proficiency, computer skills, workplace skills, and community outreach/transition to work.

In recent years, Dakhla has gained the attention of global investors thanks to its strategic location on Morocco’s Atlantic coastline and its touristic potential, with many highlighting the prosperous future of the southern Moroccan city.
