Rabat - Industrial business activities saw a noticeable decline in the course of July, with the national production capacity dropping by three points to 71%, according to Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM).

In a monthly survey BAM conducts on Moroccan businesses, 55% of business owners in the industrial sector said that production has largely stagnated in the course of July, and 33% said production is actually declining, while only 12%% said that production increased.

As to market demand for industrial products, the survey report indicates that 33% of businesses saw stagnating sales, and 32% of businesses saw a month of declining sales.

When asked about new market demand, 45% of surveyed businesses said that they have received no new orders from clients, 29% said the number of orders has in fact increased, and 26% reported a decline in the number of orders.

Setting the suboptimal state of the current market, Moroccan businesses seemed to be more optimistic about the prospects of growth in the upcoming three months.

More than a third of business owners said that they expect both production and demand to increase in the course of the following three months.

In the same survey, around 30% of the business owners said that the market is currently cloaked with uncertainty, and that this makes them unable to forecast the trajectory that production or sales could take.

Compared to results of the same survey a month earlier, the share of businesses reporting stagnating demand rose by 13% at the end of July.

While 40% of businesses reported a rise in the volume of production, the number dropped to 12% a month later.
