Air Traffic Controllers Threaten 15-Day Strike Across Morocco

The strike could cause flight delays and cancellations, which could throw a wrench in the airports’ schedules.

Rabat - Morocco’s air traffic controllers are threatening to carry out a 15-day strike across the country's airports.

The Moroccan Unified Office of Air Traffic Controllers announced on Saturday a social movement for a period of 15 days. The social movement will start on December 23, the office said.

The office, which is affiliated with the Democratic Confederation of Labor (CDT), said that its social movement aims to protest the lack of inaction to answer its demands and failed negotiations on a new labor agreement.

The office also accused Morocco's National Office of Airports (ONDA) management of not complying with the agreements concluded between the controllers and the Moroccan airport authority.

The agreements aimed at providing controllers with salary increases as well as better working conditions.

Air traffic controllers were previously promised salary increases in a memorandum of understanding signed by the former head of ONDA’s management.
According to the office, air traffic controllers’ services will only be provided for military, medical, and humanitarian flights.

This is not the first time the office has announced a social movement.

In October, the bureau of air traffic controllers announced their plan to hold a 15-day social movement including a series of strikes to protest against the lack of communication about the staff’s demands.

Air traffic controllers play a key role in facilitating the safe movement of flights. The controller's role is to direct pilots on which runways to use and at which altitudes to fly.

A potential strike could cause suspension or flight delays across airports in Morocco. The protest could also cause a crisis in flights scheduled across international airports.
